There are three main categories that can be compared between the classical Hades and the modern Hades: his characterization, his relationship with Zeus, and his domain of the Underworld.Īs with all character portrayals in film, but especially for those of a supernatural or stylized nature, appearance is a key aspect of the character and the first insight the viewer gets into their nature. The character of Hades has evolved to suit a new age and a new audience, just as all elements of myth have shifted over the ages depending on storyteller and context. While the characterization of Hades in modern films often differs quite strongly with his ancient heritage, these depictions are a continuation of the evolving mythic tradition. In addition, the Underworld that he represents is as much of a character as the mythical being and thus holds a special position in film. ![]() While the portrayals of Hades are often very different, similar themes emerge, such as his appearance, his methods of interacting with other characters, and his motivations. Since then, he has made numerous appearances in film, comics, and video games. Hades, however, only began to permeate mainstream media in the 90’s, with a flurry of roles, including Disney’s Hercules (1997) and the 1990’s television show Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. These popular characters embody recognizable archetypes that have persisted since the original ancient Greek epic poems and theater. There are some characters that appear repeatedly, such as Odysseus, Hercules, and Zeus. From the Peplum films of the 60’s to the myth-themed summer blockbusters of today, Greek and Roman heroes and gods play out reimagined stories, inspired by ancient myths and transformed by modern writers for a contemporary audience. Film has become a crucial outlet for these tales. Greek and Roman mythology has persisted for ages and has transformed over time to suit different people and places. ![]()
